About this deal

If the idea of graphite and colour in one pencil is surprising, just wait until you add water to Derwent Graphitint and it explodes into colour! Watercolourists should be aware that these paints are opaque, though some rich colours can be made in combination with gouache and so it doesn't matter about being opaque then. A round 8mm diameter pencil with a 4mm strip that has the same physical properties as an 8B Watersoluble Sketching Pencil with the added versatility of coloured pigment.

When used dry the graphite is the strongest tone with a suggestion of colour, once wetted the colour becomes more vibrant and changes into rich earthy tones. Contains the following colours: Port, Aubergine, Dark Indigo, Slate Green, Ivy, Chestnut, Cool Brown, Cocoa, Storm, Midnight Black, Cloud Grey and Cool Grey. The extendable front plate has a self feeding mechanism which stops when the pencil has reached a superb point. They don't offer the same silvery sheen as graphite pencils do and they feel heavier in application. Use them dry when you want to add just a hint of colour, or add water to create richer, more vibrant effects. It may not have quite the same versatility of the Graphitint pencils – which can be left dry to provide only the slightest hint of colour or wet to become more vibrant – but what it lacks in that regard, it makes up for in portability. To soften these lines I used a thinner bristled paintbrush to carefully wipe over the lines but avoided over-saturation so as not to lighten the colours to much. I attempted to erase some of the blue colour to see how well I could remove it but was never able to fully erase the tinge.

If used dry they produce grey shadings with subdued hues but just add water and the colours become bolder and richer. These were the ones I was most excited about as, lightfastness issues aside, I loved playing with my Graphitint pencils. Other colours were added to the edges of the wings creating a layering process of wet/dry applications until I got the right amount of detail and colour strength. The colours included in this set are Port, Juniper, Aubergine, Dark Indigo, Steel Blue, Ocean Blue, Slate Green, Green Grey, Meadow, Russet, Autumn Brown, Graphite Grey. The Derwent Graphitint pan set would make a fun and interesting gift for an artistic friend or family member. Protecting your portrait upon completion can be achieved by using a fixative spray and I may do a window test with this painting to check the lightfastness of the colours.

Contains the following colours: Port, Juniper, Aubergine, Dark Indigo, Shadow, Steel Blue, Ocean Blue, Slate Green, Grren Grey, Meadow, Ivy, Sage, Chestunut, Russet, Cool Brown, Cocoa, Autumn Brown, Storm, Warn Grey, Midnight Black, Mountain Grey, Cloud Grey, Cool Grey and White. This set comes in small, durable plastic case - ideally sized for travel - and includes a mini waterbrush, a sponge and five mixing palettes. Love the quality, they blend beautifully and produce strong, complex colours (the obscure names - "storm", "sage" or "juniper" are not what you'd think - take a bit of working out, but they are good). You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. Graphitint will appeal to artists looking for something a little bit different but with all the familiar qualities of their favourite graphite pencils.I’ve not conducted my own lightfastness test with the pans yet, but the tests I did with some of the pencils showed about half the colour saturation lost within 7 days of starting my test (with the charts pinned to my front window) and the colour was completely gone after a month, so it’s safe to assume a test with the pans would have a similar outcome. Used dry Graphitint produces just a suggestion of colour, but add water to wash out the lines and make the colour much more vibrant. With 24 beautiful shades which can be blended they are a hugely innovative and multi faceted product. I'm no watercolourist and have minimal knowledge on how best to work watercolour pencils so followed the same concept as I do with acrylics. As you can see from the swatch above, the colours dry can be viewed as similar, that is until you activate them with water.
