This is the Reposado expression from Tequila El Rayo, which distils 100% Blue Weber agave in 105 year old copper stills and matured for seven months in casks that previously held whiskey before being bottled.The sweeter notes and slight oak smoke from the barrel aged techniques come through and has a nice lingering finish.
Rested in ex-whisky casks for 7 months, it has a golden caramel colour and a rich, nutty complexity. Overall, it's a vibrant tequila, with a citrus (almost tropical) note, fresh herbal tones and a peppery finish that pair perfectly with bittersweet taste of tonic water. Disappointing, because I bought this expecting it to be "Exceptionally smooth and gentle", which is a description far better suited for Cazadores Blanco, my current benchmark for smooth tequilas. Fill your highball glass with lots of ice, pour over a healthy glug of your tequila of choice (40ml is El Rayo’s sweet spot), top with premium tonic, and garnish with a nice big wedge of grapefruit. This particular expression is not made with lightning, but with 105 year old copper stills, which distil the agave twice before its bottled up.
