About this deal

Blood on Satan’s Claw is widely regarded as part of the ‘unholy trinity’ of cult classics which gave birth to the film genre that would become known as folk horror. I wouldn't say I was disappointed but I think giving it five stars would be because I like the film more than the book. We get a chance to know the characters more and what motivated them and it all makes a lot more sense now. Mark, one of the three children, is lured out by his classmates, who are playing truant from their scripture classes so they can play ritualistic games in a ruined church under their ringleader, Angel Blake. Another crucial difference is that the witch hunt features real witches and not delusions or misogyny.

The Devil’s Advocates range is aimed at exploring the classics of horror cinema, and the contributors are generally firmly entrenched in that world via careers in academia, journalism or through their own contributions to the literature of horror. I haven't seen the film this book is based on, but the book itself is a great tale of devil worship and general folk horror madness from the 17th century. Enhanced by Richard Wells’ woodblock artwork and a wonderful design by Unbound books, this is a beautiful package that is a perfect companion to the film. Widely regarded as one of the foundational 'Unholy Trinity' of folk horror film, The Blood on Satan's Claw (1971) has been comparatively over-shadowed, if not maligned, when compared to Witchfinder General (1968) and The Wicker Man (1973). Depicted characters such as the beguiling Angel Blake (one of my all-time favourite movie villains) look very much like their onscreen counterparts (Linda Hayden in Angel’s case). This book is a great introduction to the movie and it brings out several aspects of it that I had missed watching it on my own. Primarily working in the television industry, he has provided graphic props for the likes of Poldark, Sherlock, Doctor Who, and the BBC adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula.

A well-written, fast-paced little folk-horror novel, that stands on its own merits regardless of the film that birthed it.The next section looks at the film’s production and reception, this introduces the reader to some of the key figures involved in making Blood on Satan’s Claw such a runaway success. My other complaint is that paragraphs quickly change focus or seem to be describing totally different events and don't flow together well.

Folk Horror Revival is a non-profit organisation and all donations go towards us being able to organise events and projects, not into our pocket. Convinced that the house contains evil, Peter sneaks into the attic room at night and is attacked by a creature with a furred claw. It’s been a long time in coming but well worth the wait I feel, as I thoroughly enjoyed the book both for its narrative and writing and for its visual appeal. The ruined church that figures prominently is the old Saint James Church in Bix Bottom, which had been abandoned in 1875.

The books in question are David Evans-Powell’s monograph of The Blood on Satan’s Claw and Brandon Grafius’ treatment on The Witch. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice.

I'm not sure, but the mystery and uncertainty sometimes feels a little jarring rather than pulling you deeper in. The shoot lasted approximately eight weeks, and mainly took place in the small village of Bix Bottom, Oxfordshire, located in the Chiltern Hills. If you like spooky reads, you’ve probably read more than one “witch hunt” narrative and are thusly familiar with their structure. Gatiss was featured in a spoken-word adaptation of the film, alongside Linda Hayden (playing a different role to the one she played in the film), released by Audible.
