About this deal

I wasn’t sure why my ball didn’t come out as a fully formed circle but instead, one with an ever so slightly flat end, but so did little mans. A mixture of up to five colours can be poured into one of the three supplied moulds (one large, spherical design and two small, irregularly shaped ones), immersed in water, and then split open after four minutes to reveal a superbly bouncy creation.

The next instructions were to add some water, and immerse the mould (which has some holes) in water. We are also including a few extra packets with every purchase to ensure there is always enough material in each kit. Part science experiment, part arts and crafts activity, the kit arrives with all the ingredients they need to make magic balls in minutes, including 25 bags of color crystal powder, 5 ball molds, and easy step-by-step instructions. The small boy carefully squirted some undiluted spirit vinegar (acetic acid), rather than watered down vinegar we used in cleaning coins, onto the top of the coin.Best of all, our bulk party packs make thoughtful Christmas gifts or birthday presents, so pick up a few for future projects!

I've seen them marketed as an educational science activity, and it's quite possible that if you pay a bit more, you get something that tells you a bit about what you're doing and why, but there was nothing like this in the cheap kit. I've seen a few kits to make bouncy balls for sale, and I recently bought a cheap one to give it a go as they looked like some fun science and I thought my 4 year old might enjoy it. With everything you need included in this brilliant STEM set, the Bouncing Balls set let's you discover science in an easy way.Little man was quite excited about this kit which is rare as lately he only seems to get excited about anything WWE related (yes his driving me a bit nuts).

The activity is great for the improvement of his fine motor skills as you need to be careful when tipping the crystals into the mould therefore requiring a little skill not to get mum’s kitchen sides to messy. The mould was easy to open, but one half stuck in to the extent that it seemed the ball would break rather than it coming out, and I had to get a knife to assist it.

I blogged before about cleaning some two pence coins with vinegar , and how they got a turquoise tinge after washing if we didn't rinse off the cleaning solution.

Children like little man will be interested in the science behind their bouncy ball creations and you may find that they are hungry to learn more about how they went from crystal to ball. When you briefly add water, the PVA is soluble, meaning the long polymers are able to move around in the water, and get tangled up with molecules from adjacent granules. By bouncing the ball back and forth with a partner or rolling it against the wall, students can measure the angles. Using the Bouncing Ball Class Kit, students can construct and revise an explanation for the outcome of a simple chemical reaction based on the outermost electron states of atoms, trends in the periodic table, and knowledge of the patterns of chemical properties. With just a little water, you'll be able to create a fun toy that'll give you endless entertainment.
