About this deal

An official report from the day from Captain Harry Poat, the SAS second in command who took part in the fierce fight, records. He thought only of escape and the future; of his wife and baby son in England; and everything else he wanted to do. In Singapore and Ghana, he designs and hand-builds boats (no power tools), sailing his 32-foot ketch, out into mid-Atlantic and back to England. Paddy Mayne gave the gyro compass to my father, his troop sergeant at the time, with a request that he modify it so that it could work in an SAS jeep.

When the Americans linked up with them, they refused to believe that Almonds had acquired an American Jeep legitimately and he was marched off to General George Patton. More than anything, I hope that this book will encourage people who began life holding very few cards. After wishing them good evening and good luck, Stirling, accompanied for a few yards by Lewes, headed off towards the Officers' Mess tent. Almonds didn’t talk about himself so I am delighted that his daughter has now written the story of his post-war adventuring. He told them that there was a naval station just down the road, one of those dry land ships that the Navy took so seriously, where they had to talk about going ashore. This remarkable story of Jim Almonds (Gentleman Jim) is set in wartime England, the western desert, Italy and France and recounts his formative role in the birth of the SAS. When war broke out Blakeney had been working at the docks as a ‘lumper’ or general labourer at the busy docks. Written by Gentleman Jim s daughter and based on Almond s own diaries, various primary sources and interviews with other originals , the action throughout is vivid and immediate.

The fort features heavily in SAS Rogue Heroes as Stirling, played by Connor Swindells turns his ragtag but fiercely brave recruits into a fighting force. Such methods of interaction enabled him to make the most of his considerable powers of oral persuasion and personal charm.Military Medal : This NCO has at all times and under the most testing conditions shown great powers of leadership. The moon had not risen and the stars of the immense desert night gave little light, cloaking their clandestine mission.

Night after night they broke out through the Tobruk perimeter for reconnaissance missions, attack artillery positions or capture prisoners. He was then shipped to Italy where he and three friends escaped from a camp in February 1943 after overcoming an Italian officer.Stirling liked a face to face meeting, possibly with a few key points sketched out on the back of a tobacco packet as an aide mémoir. On December 14, 1941, Almonds and Jock Lewes, another of the SAS originals, carried out a successful attack on the main Tripoli coastal road. The story is set in the dog days of the British Empire, with snap-shot detail of the many countries in which Almonds served and the ports he visited during his three-month sea voyage.

This remarkable story of Jim Almonds (Gentleman Jim) is set in wartime England, the western desert, Italy and France, and recounts his formative role in the birth of the SAS. Using a map Almonds stole from a priest’s Bible, the four PoWs travelled by night through bad weather, reaching the coast after 12 days. Ahead of this weekend’s Remembrance commemorations, and with the cooperation of Almonds’ closest family, I’m delighted to tell the story of his remarkable life. After a spell in Ethiopia training the emperor’s army, it felt good to be back in action, to smell cordite and hear the crack of rifles.Re-joining the army, he serves as a military advisor to Emperor Hailie Selassie in the British Military Mission to Ethiopia, before becoming Second-in-Command of the Eritrea Police Field Force – a British paramilitary organization. Five more shifta emerged, throwing their arms on the ground in front of them - handguns, a sword and even a spear. The short barrels and small calibre might support such a notion but success depended on an accurate hit – and Almonds was a marksman. Almonds was moved to Campo 65, Gravina, where he was kept in solitary confinement and allowed no exercise.
