After Nobunaga's betrayal and death at Honno-ji Temple in 1582, Toyotomi Hideyoshi went on to complete what his leader had started. What became of her thereafter is unclear, and the role of onna-bugeisha faded toward the Edo Period, though Tomoe reemerged as a popular figure in ukiyo-e prints and kabuki plays. In 1331, he joined Emperor Go-Daigo (1288-1339) in a bid to wrest power back from the Kamakura Shogunate, under which the emperor had become a mere figurehead.
His translations are a testament to his mastery of the language for they flow with lively ease that one might not expect from accounts, many of which are ancient. By the end of the Sengoku period, allegiances between warriors vassals, also known as military retainers, and lords were solidified. Texts describe him as standing nearly six feet tall, with a powerful frame and well above the average strength.
The naginata, which was difficult to maneuver in close formation, and the long, heavy tachi fell into disuse and were replaced by the nagamaki, which could be held short, and the short, light katana, which appeared in the Nanboku-cho period and gradually became more common. Typical examples are the tachi (long sword) and naginata (halberd) used in close combat, and the ō-yoroi and dō-maru styles of armor. When his troops were finally overwhelmed at the Battle of Minatogawa near present-day Kobe, Kusunoki committed suicide rather than allow himself to be captured. Oda Nobunaga made innovations in the fields of organization and war tactics, made heavy use of arquebuses, developed commerce and industry, and treasured innovation.
He joined Toyotomi Hideyoshi at the Siege of Odawara in 1590 and, following Hideyoshi's unification of Japan, joined in the ultimately failed campaigns in Korea as well. Though this is the first known use of the title shōgun, it was a temporary title and was not imbued with political power until the 13th century.
