About this deal

Atlantic breezes help cool the vineyards and maintain the fresh acidity and aromatics in the mostly white wines. All seventeen of Spain's administrative regions (communidades autónomas) produce wine to some extent, including the Canary Islands and Balearic Islands. A wet and fertile area, the grapes ripen with moderate sugar levels and refreshing acidity, meaning that the wines are usually lowish in alcohol at about 10-11%. Today, with three quintas in the best winemaking areas of the Douro Demarcated Region, Poças ensures its total control over the quality of its wines and the family is more involved than ever before.

You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. They too have been involved with Port and the Douro for many generations, with ancestry dating back to the mid-17th century.Given Portugal’s significant water challenges, Symington have, since 2011, been working to reduce the amount of water needed in winery and bottling operations, and use a computer-controlled system of irrigation drips to minimise use of water in the vineyard. This has spent 20 years in cask which has given it a warm rustic amber colour and powerful dried apple and apricot flavours which merge with soft spices and full and nutty on to a long and refined finish. Beira Interior is a rather disparate region covering a vast swathe of inland Portugal south of the Douro and east of Dão. As of 2017 they are also owners of an estate in the Portalegre sub-region to the north east of the Alentejo - their first outside the Douro - with the first wines released in 2019.

In the case of this 20-year-old Tawny, the fruit has mellowed even further, offering a symphony of flavours that have reached the pinnacle of refinement. The 20 Year Old is similar in style to the I0 Year Old, but as you would expect with double the age, the colour is more amber, the nut and fig character is accentuated, and the flavour much more concentrated. After a recent visit to Graham's lodge in Porto, I came away thinking that the excellent 20yr old Tawny Port was a prime example of a quality tawny. The greatest concentration of vineyards is in Castilla-La Mancha, but the finest and most famous wines come from Galicia (Rias Baixas), Catalonia (Cava and Priorat), Andalucia (Sherry), Castilla y Leon (Rueda, Toro and Ribera del Duero) and of course Rioja.Between the mountains and the coast, on fertile clay soils, is Bairrada (barro is Portuguese for clay). The area also benefits from late-afternoon breezes which favour the production of fresh, food-friendly whites and increasingly popular sparkling wines. Their ambitious ‘Mission 2025” plan for sustainability includes goals on a range of areas including reducing carbon emissions, increasing biodiversity and climate change adaptation.

On the palate, it is rich, softly sweet and smooth, perfectly balanced, with a long and elegant finish. Today, five Symington cousins share responsibility for every aspect of the company and personally make the Graham's wines. On the palate it is rich and smooth yet perfectly balanced, with notes of dried berry fruits, nuts and woody spices. It may not be reproduced in any way whatsoever without the prior consent of Waitrose Limited nor without due acknowledgement. Fabulous accompaniment to dark chocolate, but can also be enjoyed alone as a dessert in its own right.

In the north, grapes are similar to those of the Douro while the south has a whole mix of varieties. This Tawny is a true masterpiece, with a bouquet that offers a captivating and complex array of aromas.White ports are produced the same way as red ports, except that they use white grapes – Donzelinho Branco, Esgana-Cão, Folgasão, Gouveio, Malvasia Fina, Rabigato and Viosinho. This rich and inviting bouquet is further enhanced by subtle oak nuances, a testament to the influence of the wooden casks in which it matured. This offering from Taylor's is balanced and elegant on the nose, the palate warm and rich with lovely weighted fruit, round tannins and, naturally, fabulous length. Established in 1638 by Nicolau Kopke and his son Cristiano, who came to Portugal as representatives of the Hanseatic League. In every sense, Fonseca 20 Year Old Tawny is a remarkable expression of the art of winemaking and ageing.
