But this book did leave me sitting on the fence a little bit, which is why I have gone down the middle and awarded 3 stars. For the first time ever, fans and readers of all ages can enjoy the full story of the immensely popular Hocus Pocus with this deluxe Illustrated Novelization that will show fans the likes of Max and Dani Dennison, the Sanderson Sisters, Thackery Binx the cat, and other iconic characters as only celebrated, renowned artist Gris Grimly can: in all of their darkly humorous, unique gruesome glory! This deluxe novelization of the cult classic Halloween tale Hocus Pocus, illustrated by renowned artist Gris Grimly, is a must-have for fans of the film. Max, Dani and Allison (and the black cat, which of course turns out to be the immortal Thackery Bix) escape from the cottage when Max cleverly uses his lighter to set off the sprinkler system. And my curious question-The spell book had the list of names whom apparently owned it, but Winifred was NOT the last to have it.

Hocus Pocus book is just stunning and colourful illustration style mixed of goth Edward Gorey, Tim Burton and characters in expressionism in both dark and light world. There is a several incidents like this, where the 17th century witches encounter modern wonders that mystify them. Nothing new added to make the reading experience more interesting, but it still was an enjoyable read. The book has a copyright of 2022, so evidently Disney believes interest in Hocus Pocus remains strong.

It was just very “guy gets the girl and everything along with it” and it was awkward how it centered the relationship in the final moments. Even the bullies get a bit more oomph, being described as kids who their kindergarten teacher best defined as persistent. Feels like the movie playing as you read it; had bits not in the movie, along with bits missing from within the movie not in the book.

If they can keep the witches from sucking the life force from the town's children until the sun rises, the Sanderson sisters will turn to dust. GRIS GRIMLY is an award-winning illustrator best known for his "macabre" yet humorous books for children and young adults.

Is she perhaps the girl mentioned in the prologue that Emily Binx talks to before she runs off and the girl tries to warm her? Hocus Pocus is a classic with a cult following, so when I found out there was an illustrated novel coming out, I reserved it at my library immediately. Even though I knew what was going to happen, I was still drawn into the story because of the great writing and word choice. I also adored the illustrations and the book is absolutely beautiful if you take off the dusk jacket. The only improvement I did see was an added scene where Max apologizes for Dani having talked about Allison's "yabos", to which Allison responds "You don't have to apologize for her, Dani didn't do anything wrong. The written format often allows for such things more easily than the visual, and it would not have been hard to push things a bit without overly impacting the established plot.

He lights the Black Flame Candle, accidentally releasing a coven of malicious witches, the infamous Sanderson sisters, from the afterlife. It was like I was seeing the movie in my head while I was reading and it was such a wonderful feeling. Three hundred years later, in 1993, teenage Max and his 8 year old sister Dani have just moved with their family to Salem from California. Apparently the movie is now a cult classic (I have never seen it) starring Bette Midler as the evil head witch Winnifred Sanderson.
