There are three types of John Innes potting compost: John Innes No 1, John Innes No 2, and John Innes No 3. John Innes no2 contains double the amount of nutrients found in John Innes No 1 to suit established plants. The four formulae were designed to cater for the different nutritional needs of plants ranging from seed sowing through to final containers. John Innes formulations can maximise your growing opportunity producing plants with particularly good root development.

The compound fertiliser in John Innes provides the wide spectrum of plant nutrients needed for healthy growth. With all the composts, supplementary feeding using liquid feeds can be carried out once plants are well established in their pots - usually 6-8 weeks after potting when the roots are through to the sides of the pot. Do it as soon as seedlings are large enough to handle, as overcrowding can cause poor growth and encourage fungal disease. This is no doubt taken into account by manufacturers of media that is labelled as having 'added John Innes' and formulations adjusted for adequate drainage and aeration. Gardeners who wish to formulate their own John Innes materials can use garden soil or better the loam derived from stacking turf upside down until it rots.

Loam is the most important ingredient as it provides a natural reservoir of plant foods, trace elements and contains some organic matter which releases nitrogen slowly to the plant. These qualities make John Innes composts ideal for long-lived plants kept in containers for more than one growing season.
