About this deal

The 2023 edition is the sixth in the series, and has a theme of the solar system and zodiac, with beautiful illustrations by artist Whooli Chen. Within the pages allotted to said month was so much of interest and practical use, that I would defy anyone not to find something to inform or delight them. For younger bookworms – and nostalgic older ones too – there’s the Slightly Foxed Cubs series, in which we’ve reissued a number of classic nature and historical novels.

There are also features on each month's unique nature, such as the meteor shower of the month, beehive behaviour, folklore, seasonal recipes and charts tracking moon phases and tides. Her reinvention of the traditional rural almanac has become an annual must-have for readers eager to connect with the seasons, appreciate the outdoors and discover ways to mark and celebrate each month. This compact and pocket-sized guide has the feel and weight of a traditional almanac, and provides practical information for expeditions, meteor-spotting nights and beach holidays. My garden is tiny but I am learning all the time for when I have a larger garden to turn into a sanctuary for all living creatures to enjoy the natural cycles of the seasons.Certainly there is information about the natural world and I loved the concept of following the life of an ordinary garden pond throughout the year, but there’s so much more besides. Each month has a Bun of the Month plus another appropriate recipes - just to give you a taste (see what I did there) of what to expect fig and tahini challah, meadowsweet champagne and marzipan hot cross buns are all on offer. I’ve gotten more accustomed to wintering in recent years, thanks in part to the lockdowns and this wonderful book by Katherine May. I don’t know if it’s the ex-teacher in me, but I always feel September is the beginning of a new start and with The Almanac – A Seasonal Guide to 2023 by Lia Leendertz heading for publication at the beginning of next month, now seems the perfect time to review it. The beautiful illustrations and cover added to my enjoyment, I think I'd like one of these little almanacs every year.

When the zodiac symbol is drawn, it also picks out the shape of the star formation that gives the consolation its name.

Arranged by months, this book reflects a seasonal journey through the year from January through to December. The Almanac was requested by my daughters friend I've browsed through it and I find that there is far more info than most almanacs it's almost a encyclopedia so if you want to know about the person you are courting just look up his/her sun sign there's lots about the zodiac signs, this is the book to have you never know it might lead the way to becoming a Metrogist. I love books like this and while a diary often gives you basic information, an Almanac goes into a lot more detail. It gives details of the month “at a glance” such as the appearance of the countryside and traditional practices in rural areas such as Morris dancing.
