About this deal

It feels as though we are meant to pity Kate for working so hard and trying to connect Destiny with her father - and whilst it was certainly sad to read about her neglecting her own health and falling into a depression, any likeability for her character was destroyed by how frustrating it was to read about her hysterical obsession with Danny and the way in which she neglects Destiny because of it. I felt myself shift from believing her, to feeling that she was in the midst of a breakdown, back to believing that what she was going through was real. Sunset lives with her model mum, her rockstar dad, her cute celebrity sister and her cute celebrity brother. As the novel progresses and more exciting events occur, we also obtain the POV of Detective Sergeant Joanna Harper who takes an unexpected interest in the potential abduction of her twins that Lauren initially reports to the police.

It might not seem as much like a changeling story from the reader’s perspective but it certainly could to Rosemary. There were many times when I just wanted to put it down and start another book but I'm the type of person that when I start a book, I have to finish it.A week after the night she chases but fails to catch a mysterious trespasser outside her town house, some unknown party texts Tempe four images of a corpse that looks as if it’s been chewed by wild hogs, because it has been. Once she leaves hospital, her fears don’t dissipate and things really ramp up when her babies are abducted. The Illustrated Mum won the Guardian Children’s Fiction Award, the 1999 Children’s Book of the Year at the British Book Awards and was also shortlisted for the 1999 Whitbread Children’s Book Award. But the biggest disappointment arrives in the final few chapters, as the solution to the mystery is finally revealed. Now I know that I have a very vivid imagination, and can literally picture anything in front of me, but this book gave me the creeps big time.

This was a well written, though unsettling read, as it relies heavily on folklore and fairy tales of the darker kind. is about as supportive as a dead jellyfish, so without any relief, she really begins to sink toward rock bottom. I was definitely swept up in her thoughts and equally as much into Detective Harper's investigation. Jacqueline Wilson is THE author to go to when looking for a good book for young girls although to be honest her old stuff is a lot more interesting and meaning compared to the new.A volcanic eruption is quite another, for, as the journalist who does a framing voice-over narration for Brooks’ latest puts it, when Mount Rainier popped its cork, “it was the psychological aspect, the hyperbole-fueled hysteria that had ended up killing the most people. Everyone wants to dismiss her as mentally ill except Detective Sergeant Joanna Harper, who has her own reasons for believing Lauren. It was interesting to see how much of a difference there is between a rich child and a poorer child.

Kirkus Reviews gave the book a starred review, writing that it "skillfully walks the line between psychological and supernatural horror". A psychological thriller and a half, the opening chapter of which made the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end and chilled me to my core! The author did an excellent job of portraying a post natal woman on the edge - very little sleep, a husband who shows no inclination to share responsibilities, and appears to care little about her well being. As it didn't come out until I was in secondary school, it didn't own the same meaning to me as ones such as Double Act or Tracy Beaker would.Of course different characters perceive each other in different ways, but Patrick (Lauren’s husband) swung so wildly from devoted family man to selfish cad that it’s impossible to say what kind of person he is or what his motives might be. When Destiny and her mum attend Danny’s film premiere, Destiny’s secret painfully unfolds – and the step-sisters tentatively discover a genuine friendship.

Melanie Golding pitched this story perfectly, for me it was just the right level of unnerving, sinister and creepy.

Lauren keeps the otherworldly details about the mysterious woman and her babies-that-are-not-quite-babies to herself. I can’t honestly remember when I first came across a changeling story so I’m not even sure where to recommend finding that content. It has a story that has been featured in other books, portrayed in different ways of course but the same basic plot, yet Wilson has made it unique in its own way. Brooks is a pro at building suspense even if it plays out in some rather spectacularly yucky episodes, one involving a short spear that takes its name from “the sucking sound of pulling it out of the dead man’s heart and lungs. Through these two women’s experiences we see many other characters dismiss Lauren’s claims primarily because they seem too far-fetched or inconvenient.
