FL-D (and other color correction) filters are not used as much in digital photography as they were in film days. Furthermore, there many different types (and hence color casts) of fluorescent lighting today than were available thirty years ago. Unless a fluorescent color correction filter is matched to the color of the fluorescent light, it can have a different color cast result than intended. It's so much easier to control white balance in camera (or in post, if shooting raw images) than it is to deal with filters, in general.
As a videographer, it’s important to know what different filters can do so that you can choose which one suits your style. Understanding this can help you overcome difficult lighting situations. So go ahead and start experimenting with some of the filters we have mentioned above. I take most of my photos in the marine environment. That’s why the usage of a CPL filter is crucial to remove the reflections. But in some cases, the reflection is a beautiful detail that you want to keep in the image. Always be mindful of your subject before using any filter. It might affect the overall essence of a scene.
Diffusion filters are used to soften your subject and help you capture dreamlike videography. They are often used on cameras that are too sharp to make the video look more organic and less digital. The Malus formula tells us that the best polarization occurs when the incoming rays in the CPL filter are at 90°. This is with respect to the rays coming out of the polarities. A linear polarizer will eliminate reflections from water, glass, and other non-metallic surfaces. A circular polarizer will remove reflections from metal surfaces as well. These filters are used for B&W photography. They all require some exposure compensation by your camera. The filter is all one color–such as red, green, yellow, orange, etc. If they’re used in color photography, they’ll tint the entire scene the color of the filter.
