About this deal

Elusive online journalist Scott King investigates the murder of a teenager at an outward bound centre, in the first episode of the critically acclaimed, international bestselling Six Stories series… Stephen attended the grammar school in Durham and Lisbon Falls High School, graduating in 1966. From his sophomore year at the University of Maine at Orono, he wrote a weekly column for the school newspaper, THE MAINE CAMPUS. He was also active in student politics, serving as a member of the Student Senate. He came to support the anti-war movement on the Orono campus, arriving at his stance from a conservative view that the war in Vietnam was unconstitutional. He graduated in 1970, with a B.A. in English and qualified to teach on the high school level. A draft board examination immediately post-graduation found him 4-F on grounds of high blood pressure, limited vision, flat feet, and punctured eardrums. I think I’ve also grown a little tired of this format. Everything seems to tie in too neatly, and the story always seems to unfold in the same way. I also find the narration of secondhand dialogue to be rather fatiguing after a while. Perhaps if I had read these books with more time in between each of them, I would find them more enjoyable? The setting and the sense of place that you get whilst reading Beast is tremendous and you are transported to the rundown coastal town of Ergarth. Ergarth is a claustrophobic small town where Tankerville Tower ‘The Vampire Tower’ a decaying monolith on the outskirts casts a forbidding shadow over the whole town. It is an area that has been forgotten by the government with no money and no jobs available. It is a place where life has been drained, leeched away, bleak and drab where the colour is muted and has turned to grey. It is a community where everyone knows each other and where gossip and rumours are rife. It is a town with history, the Ergarth Vampire a story that has been passed down through the centuries and from one generation to the next. This is the fourth novel in the author’s Six Stories series and once again we’re with podcaster Scott King as he investigates a mysterious event over six episodes, in each one speaking to someone with a different perspective of what occurred.

In the wake of the 'Beast from the East' cold snap that ravaged the UK in 2018, a grisly discovery was made in a ruin on the Northumbrian coast. Twenty-four-year-old vlogger, Elizabeth Barton, had been barricaded inside what locals refer to as 'The Vampire Tower', where she was later found frozen to death. There were many twists and turns and the whole thing is a MUST SEE. All fans of Six Stories will surely love it. And it’s all true. A copy of this book was kindly provided to me by the publisher in exchange for an honest review. Thank you! *** I’m also curious about the protagonist himself. Not many details were shared about the aftermath of Book 3. I mean, surely there would have been a huge fallout given what a big mystery the case was and how it was resolved? Not to mention the possible implications of how everything was executed? Enter elusive investigative journalist Scott King, whose podcast examinations of complicated cases have rivalled the success of Serial, with his concealed identity making him a cult internet figure. In a series of six interviews, King attempts to work out how the dynamics of a group of idle teenagers conspired with the sinister legends surrounding the fell to result in Jeffries’ mysterious death. And who’s to blame…Matt Wesolowski is a masterful story teller and has found a unique niche in the “fictional true crime” podcast genre. I’m not sure that is even a genre, and if it wasn’t, it sure as hell is now. ‘Beast’ is the fourth episode of the “Six Stories” series narrated and curated by the one and only Scott King, podcast host extraordinaire, whose mission is to delve into true crime stories of intrigue and mystery, viewing the story through multiple angles and lenses, prodding and poking every component, seeking out the people who might provide a different and unique take on the heart of the story.

Musicals aren’t always kind to women (some classics are downright misogynist), but Six is a joyous celebration of sisterhood. It’s the kind of show that makes you want to be a teenager again; if you’d found Six when you were sixteen, you’d be obsessed too. No wonder it’s getting 60,000 streams per day. It’s a relentless & original work of modern rural noir which beguiles & unnerves in equal measure. Matt Wesolowski is a major talent’ Eva Dolan What was the motive for the unspeakable act? What drove those two children to commit such a terrible crime? This review can also be found on my blog The Tattooed Book Geek: https://thetattooedbookgeek.wordpress... Demon is the sixth and latest book the Six Stories series written by Matt Wesolowski, featuring journalist Scott King as he interviews six different witnesses of a cold case on his true-crime podcast, Six Stories. In this book, the focus is on what really happened to Sydney Parsons in 1995. Endlessly inventive and with literary thrills a-plenty, Matt Wesolowski is boldly carving his own uniquely dark niche in fiction’ Benjamin Myers In case you’re not familiar with Six Stories: last year I wrote a review of Deity for Sublime Horror that also acts as an overview of/intro to the whole series.)

King decides to take on the 1996 disappearance of 15-year-old Tom Jeffries, who went missing during a trip his Outward Bound-type group took to the Scarclaw Fell Woodlands Centre. Tom was one of five teenagers who participated in the trip, and none of his peers knew what happened to him—when they went to bed he was there, and when they awoke in the morning, he was gone. Tom's body wasn't discovered until a year later by the son of the man who bought the land where the Centre once stood. His death was ruled a "misadventure," and no one was found liable. On March 12, 2020, the giddy new pop musical Six — about the six wives of Henry VIII, reimagined as a glam pop-ballad-belting girl group — was set to open on Broadway in a transfer from London. Then, just hours before curtain, Broadway shut its doors. By the time Six reopened for rehearsal in August 2021, all the jewel-toned plastic-and-foil costumes had deteriorated so much that they had to be rebuilt. Beast is a flawless thriller but once again Matt Wesolowski does not hesitate to turn the spotlight on human flaws: the need for attention, to be liked and to get likes, the total disregard for other people’s feelings, and snowball effect that may have. On a camping trip 20 years ago in eerie Scarclaw Fell, 15 year old Tom Jeffries went missing. His body turned up a year later. While police didn’t entertain murder at the time, his story made headlines and became a national sensation.Nor does author Matt Wesolowski restrict his arch references to a single historical source – rather, with delicious subtlety he evokes the chilling spirit of a certain Hungarian Countess who consumed her servants and ended her days walled up in a tower… I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: it isn’t winter without a new Six Stories book to get my teeth into. Like its predecessor Deity, Demon deviates slightly from the established formula: rather than a deprived or run-down area, it’s set in a picture-perfect Yorkshire village. Yet this place, Ussalthwaite, has a chequered history, and some believe it to be cursed. Readers of Kathleen Barber’s Are You Sleeping and fans of Ruth Ware will enjoy this slim but compelling novel’ Booklist Was it an accident? Or something more sinister? It seems like there's always something to hide, especially in the shadowed and unstable lands of Scarclaw Fell. You know the thrill of it. The creep that slithers in from drawing out ancient tales of the undead. The inability to turn away when the whispers begin to ooze out of mouths recanting stories of those dark, gnarly figures that walk soundlessly through the night. Searching, clawing their way out to encompass the unsuspecting......

Scott King’s podcast investigates the 1995 cold case of a demon possession in a rural Yorkshire village, where a 12-year-old boy was murdered in cold blood by two children. Book six in the chilling, award-winning Six Stories series. Six Stories is a creepy, atmospheric, suspense filled psychological thriller fueled by unreliable memories coupled with fear, myth, and darkness. Katherine Howard (Samantha Pauly, heartbreaking) puts a chilling spin on Britney Spears circa “ If You Seek Amy” in “ All You Wanna Do.” The song starts dark and only gets darker, with Howard sexy-baby-cooing her way through a list of all the men who have used her and abused her. “There were four choruses,” she spits after she’s finished. “That’s how much shit I’ve had to deal with.” King struggles with this issue, and the book isn’t necessarily looking to establish a definitive answer. This ambiguous conclusion hints at Demon being the final Six Stories case, at least for now. This being the sixth book, it would, after all, be quite neat. I’d be sad – I’ll be rereading these books forever, and if there were 150 more of them I’d happily spend a year reading nothing else – but Matt Wesolowski probably doesn’t want to write 150 of them, and I’m excited to read whatever he writes next regardless.

This book examines how so many of our young people rely on the validation of internet strangers. Willing to do anything to get the most "likes" and how often the way we present ourselves online is far different than the person we actually are. It's very easy to curate a beautiful life through photos and filters but what are we truly like when the camera is off.
