It’s best to use thin acrylic paint so that you don’t have to add too much water to the paint. I share my acrylic watercolor techniques in my post How to Make Acrylics Look Like Watercolor. You’ll also want to read my post How to Make Acrylics More Vibrant. 4. Increases Gloss Suitable for a variety of surfaces and developed to provide pearlescent effects when added to colour. Most effective when used with transparent colours over dark under layers. Glazing medium and gloss medium are almost identical except for some additives such as retarder and leveling agents. This varies by the brand. For example, Golden adds retarder to their glazing medium so that it will dry slower and allow more time for blending. It was quite absorbent as a layer to paint over, but the overpainted colour began to bleed out around the beads, making sharp edges hard to achieve. The fish is sketched in, initially with a 3B pencil and then the key dark detailed areas I’ve gone over with an acrylic marker from Montana, 0.7mm in Iron Curtain. The darker lines of the marker help to define the darkest darks to judge the next tones against. Step #2 – Wash-in with Raw Umber
Modelling paste or moulding paste, is like a gel medium but more dense and hard. You can create luscious sculpted brush marks that retain their 3d stroke. Creating a glazing painting is a great way to introduce cohesiveness to your artworks. Unifying colors using tinted glazes introduces an entirely new dimension to painting. Once you begin gaining more experience glazing with acrylic you can start experimenting with more paint glazing techniques such as blending using acrylic glazes, layering different colored glazes, or adding different colored glazes to specific areas of your painting. However, once I’d painted in my muted green/blue mix onto the dark areas, it looked too green, so I introduce a red to balance this out.You may think that acrylic paint is already glossy, but different brands have different levels of sheen.
Walnut oil – This oil was not as effective as a glazing medium for my liking. It took too long to dry and it also made the paint thinner and runnier. I prefer to use cold pressed linseed oil because I like the color it imparts to my paintings. However, some artists prefer refined linseed oil because it dries faster than cold pressed linseed oil. Ultimately, it’s up to you what type of linseed oil you use in your painting. Try both types and see what works best for you! What are the benefits of using linseed oil as a glazing medium?

I felt the paste layer, over a dried dark acrylic paint swatch, was really effective, as the dark under paint showed through clearly. Some pigments are more transparent than others. If you want to create glazes that are as transparent as possible, then you should select colors that are transparent. The color charts from the manufacturers will help you to identify which colors are transparent. Some brands even list this information on the tube. Winsor & Newton Professional Acrylic Gesso - a range of superior artist quality gesso that provides excellent absorbency, adhesion, coverage and tooth in fewer coats. Pumice gels use sand and gritty concrete-like solids in a transparent binder to create texture, meaning their ability to create peaks is decreased slightly and their opacity is slightly increased. So what is the best glazing medium for oil painting? The answer, in my opinion, is linseed oil. You can buy it ready-made at most art supply stores and will work with all types of oil paints from the most expensive to the cheapest brands.
