Pandora by Susan Stokes-Chapman | Waterstones

Twenty-one-year-old Pandora “Dora” Blake lives and works in her late parents' antiquities shop in Georgian London. Her parents had been renowned antiquarians specializing in Grecian artifacts and had made their living excavating tombs in South-Eastern Europe. Their untimely death in a mishap during an excavation twelve years ago left Dora orphaned and under the care of her unscrupulous and corrupt uncle Hezekiah Blake who promptly took o Dora is living with her uncle in London, in what used to be her parents’ antiquities shop. She wants to design jewelry, which isn’t exactly something that women get to do in 1799. I love historical fiction and Greek mythology so Pandora instantly appealed to me. Pandora is Susan Stokes-Chapman’s debut novel and I’ll be honest, I fell in the love with the cover. What a beautiful book! Although beautiful books don’t always mean brilliant books, the premise intrigued me and I couldn’t wait to read this one. Pandora by Susan Stokes-Chapman Review: Plot

Pandora by Susan Stokes-Chapman - Novel Notions Book Review: Pandora by Susan Stokes-Chapman - Novel Notions

When we think of Greek myths we think of vengeful gods, legendary heroes, sweeping love affairs and dastardly deeds. They are transformative tales which explore the full range of human experience so it is hardly surprising that writers continually turn to them for inspiration. The author drops hints throughout the novel and while there was no huge twist at the end, I really enjoyed the story. I particularly enjoyed the rather ambiguous ending when it came to the identity of the mysterious man Edward met who urged him to speak to Dora. But retellings come in many forms and guises. In my debut novel Pandora I wanted to explore female agency and the complexities of human nature, all through the richness of a Georgian lens using the myth of Pandora’s box as an anchor. All the works I’ve chosen have interpreted the Greek myths in different ways, but they are all testament to how these ancient stories have got under our skin. Denise Richards reveals she is trying to talk daughter Sami Sheen, 19, out of getting breast implants because she regrets her own: 'They're toxic' An atmospheric story set in Georgian England that combines elements of Greek mythology, with age old treachery, deceit, and greed. A wonderful story full of suspense and intrigue but also charming and delightful, as we take a trip into the fascinating world of antiques. This historical adventure is inspired by the story of Pandora as Edward and Dora attempt to learn more about the history of an ancient vase and an unopened chest that has brought them both together. An unlikely pairing except for their love of antiques. Steeped in mystery and rich in imagination, an exhilarating historical novel set in Georgian London where the discovery of a mysterious ancient Greek vase sets in motion conspiracies, revelations, and romance.
