Dirr, Professor of Horticulture at the University of Georgia, has compiled arguably two of the most useful (and beautiful) books on landscape trees available. A parent species of the rarer Arran whitebeam, the rock whitebeam is becoming increasingly hard to find. The edges of some simple leaves can be indented or lobed, such as sycamore, field maple and hawthorn, so take care not to mistake these for compound leaves. Many times you can skip the key if you review the leaf illustrations and have some knowledge of individual tree species.
