Suddenly a second meteor falls on apparently the exact same sport as the first, a coincidence so remote as to be effectively impossible, and suddenly the implausible feels very real indeed. The amygdalines' sister species, the "transients" and the unnamed "post-biological" species never appear. While hard sci-fi, the relationship and character interaction is just as enjoyable and well executed as the handling of government cover-ups, alien language, and culture. The Fremda Group has still not left Earth, and it is not clear if or when they will, or what they will do after they've gone. In a flashback to Cora's youth, she processes her deteriorating situation with her family by way of a lengthy Star Wars analogy.

Cora, these are some of my former coworkers: Harris, Shaun, Natalie, Stevie, Dan-O, David, Joel , Sarah, Maria, and Dr. Obelus abducts Cora and the other amygdalines as insurance in exchange for Ampersand bringing Obelus the Genome. Scary Dogmatic Aliens: Averted for most of the Fremda ( barring Obelus), but played straight with the rest of the Superorganism, who once completely sterilized an entire planet for hosting a population of transients.For all of its drama and philosophical conundrums, Ellis's book is ultimately about the power of empathy and kindness in a universe that never has enough of either. On Cora's end, this bond causes her to become extremely attached to him in the way one would be attached to a lover. The alien eventually catches Cora, implanting a tracking and communication device into her, using her as a human puppet to launch an infiltration of the Googleplex for unknown reasons. But I am so glad this was not only decent, but it quickly has become one of my favorite novels I've read this year.
